Media Poachables 2011: The 25 Editors and Staffers... →
And frankly: Who has positioned themselves to score a raise, from their current boss, or a potential boss?
That last question’s the hardest, but it’s essential to the equation. So we developed a fairly-but-not-completely arbitrary number to deal with it: the B.P.N. (orBallpark Poachability Number). It’s an index compiled from salaries known, either of The Poachables’ or those around them, and...

as the morning of October 17, 2003. The only saving grace being that this morning—which began with a crushing hangover and the vague realization I had a meeting to attend in 15 minutes so I probably shouldn’t still be in bed—wasn’t quite as bad as that morning. No morning could be as bad as that morning.
October 17, 2003, was the worst morning of all time. The night before, Aaron Boone...

Terrible narratives about Ryan Adams Pt. 3
rawkblog:
Stereogum:
All those tracks seem to promise a return to form, and now the entire new album Ashes & Fire is out there, streaming in full at NPR’s website. So: What do you guys think? Are we back in Heartbreaker territory now?
Me, yesterday:
9 out of 10 reviews for this album are going to call it a comeback, name-drop Heartbreaker, etc., as if albums like Love is...

Anonymous is Getting a Book: Proposal Being... →
Exclusive! Fun times. Also, inner-Anonymous smack talk:
An authoritative book would make the organization and its activism accessible beyond media coverage and, among other things, those other books on the matter, Mr. Housh noted, as he bemoaned the dearth of accurate information on the subject. “A lot of books about Anonymous—Cole Stryker’s being one of them—there were some sentences that were...

The joys of the High Holiday season
Parents: Are you coming home for the holidays this year? You haven't been since 2000.
Me: Nope. And I haven't stepped foot in a synagogue since then either.
Parents: It won't be religious at all, just a family dinner and participating in our cultural tradition.
Me: If I wanted to participate in a silly, superstitious fantasy world masquerading as a culture while eating, I'd just get stoned and watch a Harry Potter movie and munch on chips.
Parents: Come on, you know we're not religious, we just do it because of the tradition.
Me: Perverting tradition and cultural heritage is part of the Israeli government's narrative justifying the oppression and occupation of Palestine for the past 60 years, and the best thing a younger generation can do to "honor" a tradition is end it.
Parents: WE JUST WANT TO HAVE DINNER WITH YOU.
Me: Then you should totally come down to Brooklyn, there's a great new ramen place with the most delicious pork broth.

Now let’s all stop signing Internet petitions and go buy a book.
– Choire Sicha, Saving the St. Mark’s Bookshop (From Itself) | The Awl
I’m with Sam on this thing. I love St. Marks and don’t want to see it go, OF COURSE, but the best way to support bookstores is to use them.

On The Matter Of The Gawker All-Staff Meeting.
Just wrote this in an email but throwing it on here just because:
“Attendees described the meeting as alternately hilarious, exciting, boring and frightening.” Exactly how my one and only meeting with Nick and Gaby was. To a tee. Not surprised by any of this, though: One reason Nick loved [REDACTED] so dearly was that [REDACTED] openly embraced the idea that editorial staffers are an...

JUSTIN BIEBER CROSSES UP STEVE NASH
You know Nash hasn’t guarded anyone in his 45 years in the league, but this is a new low. Biebs got ‘em, then went to the reverse, and his girlfriend’s cheering for him on the sidelines. You let Justin Bieber do you like that, and you gotta retire, Nash.
