THIS IS HOW IT WORKS PEOPLE
“If you’re covering the “latest petty scandal in Albany,” you might be better off as a non-profit in Nick Denton’s view. “You think that’s a damning indictment of modern society and a recipe for idiocracy? Fine. Start a nonprofit to cover all the local-government news you think a healthy society needs. But don’t expect advertisers—or commercially-minded publishers or readers, for that matter—to share your interests.””—
PBS and NPR are funded, in large part, by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting so as NOT to have their editorial tainted by advertisers. This is just the state of affairs, and it’s not changing.
I agree with some of this but Denton saying that bigger ads are better is an example of publishers with their head so far up their advertisers ass, while patting themselves on the back, that they don’t realize the readers are basically going to say fuck you to either the advertiser, the publisher, or both.
Yes, we know the argument, you don’t give a shit about what the readers think, you have to make the advertisers happy and the readers will complain and come back anyway. This simply isn’t true. If you continue to piss off your readers, eventually they’re going to stop putting up with it.
