I’m Waiting for the Day - Beach Boys
You didn’t think
(No!)
That I could sit around and let him
work
You didn’t think
(No!)
That I could sit around and let (watch) him
take you
You didn’t think that I could sit around and
let him go
You didn’t think that I could sit back and
let you go.
This, however, is the Pet Sounds song I could probably find the least amount of wrong with. The strings in this song are…something else, but they really bring it home around 2:29, in that moment of silence, right before the big drum-kick comes back in alone (BOOM, BOOM, BOO-BOOM-BOO-BOOM) and then the vocals, closing it with the “come on, like I’m not a fighter” ending, as if to reinforce the point that this, if I haven’t already won this thing, it’s not over yet after the song’s story concludes. It’s this fantastic prologue you don’t really expect, and then once you do expect it, because you’re listened to the song hundreds of times, you find yourself listening to it in the best way possible, in your car, just cranking it at this part, blasting it, and drumming out the beat on your steering wheel, screaming along through the end. It’s pretty magical.
