I really try not to jump into the whole right/left politics and Tea-Party fray (see Bakes’s Auto-Tab-Close Policy) simply because so much of it (on both sides!) is produced by extremists with ridiculous and generally un-interesting platitudes and really generally lacks a sense of humor about it all. Steven Thrasher really closed in on it, and closed in on it correctly, and was hysterical in doing so. The calls to reception about him being Black, sure, they’re scary, but nothing this place hasn’t seen before. I think it’s safe to say we’re all very proud of him, and of this issue, which also features Nat Hentoff pulling a SHOTS FIRED at Tom Robbins where Hentoff goes against the Cordoba Center, Robbins’ column about the Republican AG candidate from Staten Island (which is something straight out of the second season of The Wire), and J. Hoberman’s hysterical Social Network review (“You Are Not The Only Asshole On Facebook”), which describes some media guys I’ve met IRL as “supercilious” and contains the lines:
Difficult not to root for this graceless parvenu to overturn the system, especially since the self-entitled Winklevoss lads make even Harvard’s then-president, the execrable Larry Summers (played to the hilt by Rush Limbaugh fill-in Douglas Urbanski), look good; it’s additionally enjoyable to see Zuck blithely confound a succession of high-powered lawyers once the bamboozled Winklevosses file suit.
