So, about that Phoenix show tonight?
I’ve said before that they’re too stiff and too regimented in concert to learn anything more about them as a band. I’ve bitched about Terminal 5 plenty of times, too, a venue that’s done little to endear itself to me as a place to see a truly spectacular show. I typically can’t get past seeing it as anything but a place taking concerts away from the Bowery Ballroom.
But I love being proven wrong. And it’s not often you go to a show where literally every. single. person you can see is smiling for 90 minutes straight. Phoenix blew Terminal 5 away tonight, and there’s now no question I’ll be securing tickets for the September’s Central Park show with Passion Pit. They played with moxie, they are absolute showmen and professionals, they’re talented and charismatic as anyone I’ve ever seen, and they did a cruical thing they couldn’t the last time I saw them (in 2006): connect with the audience. They re-worked a few songs, they played a perfect setlist, I mean…I’m truly sorry if you couldn’t make it. Seriously. That was just a completely perfect rock show.
